Life doesn’t get any better than this – Fuzokuga; 2009
Last weeks wonderful weather in London made me think about the Sun; ideas such as what happens to space and time at the surface of the sun. I also re-watched Sunshine by Danny Boyle, far greater than its filmic references may suggest. I also rediscovered some old things I made, some over 14 years ago. They re-fired the imagination and kick started my desire to work in more vivid palettes. Like Pipilotti said “… when we make reproductions we always loose colour compared to the original”. I also found a book of old Japanese illustrations, not Ukiyo-e but something else (Fuzokuga), all catagorised and indexed in a way visually similar to Banzuke. I say this because I have absolutely no idea how they are catagorised or what they are catagorising but from a sort of anthropological vantage point they share a kind of joy in cataloging life as if mysterious, intriguing, monotonous and alchemical all at the same time. With this in mind my eye drifts across the tables, charts and vignettes without prejudice. Once I’ve translated them I’ll see if what they are and what they look like bare any resemblance to one other.
New things I am working on include the documentation of last month’s workshop in Oslo, ideas for a sculptural project later in the year, more posters, shows in Japan and a fanciful catalogue.
